The return

It has been quite a while, but I am back with a vengeance... It is impossible to be what you want to be sometimes given certain situations.  Some choices don't allow you to make other healthier ones... for instance going to school and being forced to pay for a meal plan that doesn't fit your lifestyle of food choice.  BUT it is summer, I am cooking my own meals again and I'm excited to see what may come of being informed about food choices and not eating any animal products.  I have made my own pizza and I eat pbj (yes, there is gelatin in the jelly... I'm not that specific), and I eat a lot of fruits and veggies and stir fry's and coconut and almond milk and juices and tofu hotdogs and lunch meats and today I had the most intense veggie sub from subway.  I'll keep posting as I keep creating.

It's been a few days...

... and I'm not having too much trouble.  Today, for the first time I willingly cheated.  I couldn't NOT have my grandma's pumpkin roll for at least 1 last time.  There are a few things I have no idea how I will live without, but I'll figure it out.  NO MORE CHEATS!!!!!!!

Alternatives?

This is a random post from another blog concerning bees and veganism.

http://www.vegfamily.com/vegan-view/ethical-honey.htm

"None of us (even the militant vegans such as myself) are perfect vegans. We drive cars (gas/petrol and tires) we read books with glue we wear shoes that are rubber or polyurethane, we eat (hopefully) organic produce which is mostly using blood and bone to fertilize. We have to do our best really and not beat ourselves up for not being perfect.

Let's face it, if we were perfect we wouldn't be here. Veganism is a choice about caring for the animals and giving them a voice. I'm not saying have a steak b/c your grandmother offers it and it's already there. But you are making extremely wise and caring choices.  (What happens to the bees from honey you eat?) Most times they burn the hive or kill off 'extra' queens. That is a concern. Have you tried agave nectar? Brown rice syrupBrown rice syrup? They are wonderful alternatives. The USDAUSDA allows a certain amount of bug remains in every bit of food, chocolate is permitted the highest amount of bug remains of all foods so if you eat chocolate you eat bugs. Well any food really but more bugs with chocolate. Therefore I don't eat chocolate. But we all have to live with our own decisions. Keep up your work for the animals and optimum healthhealth and be proud of yourself for your dedication. In Peace, Reggie"

I think this man was very wise concerning the bees and vegan as a lifestyle of imperfection just like every other lifestyle available to us.

Confession 3- I'm going to try agave nectar and brown rice syrup.

I'm starting a new journey

I got the crazy idea to become a vegan for the new year, 2011, because I have trouble sleeping at night, and I don't really like meat that much anyway (except for chicken), and it seems healthier, and I really think I can do it. BUT, I have been working on preparation for it, and not eating any meats already.  Let's make a long story short. I'm basically a vegan now and I will be posting my experience.

Confession 1- Tofu hotdogs may smell like beef jerky or dog treats, but they actually taste great.  They tend to taste just like hotdogs, except a tiny bit chewier.

Confession 2- I'm not eating or using any animal byproducts, EXCEPT for honey, b/c I can't understand what is wrong with harvesting honey... it's not like they kill the bees in the process or even hurt them. I'll try to not use it often but it's natural and it doesn't hurt them so I personally have no problem with it.

More to come... I'm thinking about getting Bethenny Frankel's book...
